Medium carbon steel bolts, anchor bolts, screws, studs, nuts and self-drilling screws contain between 0.25 – 0.60% carbon and 0.60 – 1.65% manganese by weight. The mechanical properties of these studs are improved by heat treatment.
No different elements – used as an alloying agent, not other types of steel, which makes nuts and bolts known as low-cost bolts. Carbon steel nut and bolt grades are divided into three different categories based on the carbon content of mild, medium and high carbon steels.
High carbon steel bolts have a carbon content between 0.60 – 1.25%. High carbon steel alloys have manganese content in the range of 0.30 – 0.90%. Of all three grades, high carbon steel threaded rod has the highest hardness and toughness while exhibiting the lowest ductility. The high wear resistance comes from the fact that these screws are almost always hardened and tempered.
