Medium carbon steels have carbon content in the range of 0.25% and 0.60%. These steels can be heat treated by austenitizing, quenching and subsequent tempering to improve their mechanical properties. Heat treated medium carbon steel provides great load-carrying capacity with good toughness and ductility. They have relatively good strength and can be hardened by quenching.

Carbon steel flange and end flange connectors are basically made of carbon steel. Common standards include ASTM A694, ASTM A105N (SA105N), MSS SP-44, DIN 2533. The included pressure ratings are from 150 to 2500.

The properties of high carbon steel flanges include high hardness, high strength, wear resistance, and moderate ductility. Carbon steels come in different sizes and strengths. The tensile strength is in the range of 485 MPa minimum tensile strength and 250 MPa minimum yield strength. Flanges ANSI B16.5 Class 150 is the medium pressure rating for B16.5 standard flanges.
