304 also contains 8-10.5% nickel (Ni). It is added to make the austenite structure more stable at room temperature. Nickel also improves high temperature oxidation resistance, making the steel resistant to stress corrosion cracking. Where the steel is to be stretch formed, a lower percentage (8%) of nickel should be chosen. Higher percentages are better (9% or more) if the steel is to be deep drawn.

In conclusion, when looking at 304 vs 316 stainless steel, for applications that require superior corrosion resistance or water resistance, use 316 stainless steel. For other applications, 304 stainless steel will work just as well.

All in all, if you need superior corrosion resistance and your application contains water, then 316 steel is worth it. If not, 304 steel will suit your needs well.

The 304, 316 and 316L stainless steel formulations are austenitic, a term used to classify the crystal structure of the steel. The structure is achieved by heat treating at very high temperatures followed by quenching ¨C a rapid cooling process that locks the structural features in place. Austenitic formulations are stronger than martensitic or ferritic steels. Ferritic steels are magnetic, have low carbon content, and have poor corrosion resistance.

304 and 316 steels are specified for applications where corrosion resistance and product purity are still important but lack the stringent requirements in pharmaceutical, semiconductor or aerospace manufacturing. Cosmetics and food and beverage processing are examples.

While both 304 and 316 stainless steels are strong, the addition of molybdenum to 316 gives it a slight advantage over 304 in strength.
