The higher alloy content of super-austenitic steels makes them more expensive. Other steels can provide similar properties at a lower cost and are preferred in some applications. [citation needed] Low carbon versions, such as 316L or 304L, are used to avoid welding-induced corrosion problems.

¡°L¡± indicates that the carbon content of the alloy is less than 0.03%, which reduces the sensitization effect (precipitation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries) caused by high temperature during welding.

In 304 stainless steel plate, ferritic stainless steel generally has better engineering properties than austenitic stainless steel, but due to lower chromium and nickel content, corrosion resistance is reduced. They are also generally cheaper.

They contain 10.5% to 27% chromium and a very small amount of nickel, if any, but some types may contain lead. Most ingredients include molybdenum; some, aluminum or titanium.

Common ferritic grades include 18Cr-2Mo, 26Cr-1Mo, 29Cr-4Mo and 29Cr-4Mo-2Ni. These alloys may degrade due to the presence of alpha chromium, an intermetallic phase that precipitates during welding.

Martensitic stainless steels are not as corrosion resistant as the other two categories, but are very strong and tough, and are highly machinable and can be hardened by heat treatment. Martensitic stainless steels contain chromium (12 14%), molybdenum (0.2 1%), nickel (less than 2%) and carbon (about 0.1 1%) (making it harder, but the material is more brittle). It is quenched and magnetic.

Precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steels have comparable corrosion resistance to austenitic grades, but can be precipitation hardened to higher strengths than other martensitic grades. The most common 17-4PH uses about 17% chromium and 4% nickel. The Lockheed-Martin Joint Strike Fighter was the first aircraft to use precipitation-hardenable stainless steel Carpenter Custom 465 in its fuselage.

Duplex stainless steels have a mixed microstructure of austenite and ferrite, and the goal is usually to produce a 50/50 mix, although in commercial alloys this ratio may be 40/60. Duplex stainless steels are approximately twice as strong as austenitic stainless steels and also have improved resistance to localized corrosion, particularly pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking.

Stainless steel plate 304 is often referred to as “corrosion resistant steel” – it does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as regular carbon steel. Chromium forms a passivation layer of chromium (III) oxide (Cr2O3) when 304 steel is exposed to oxygen. The layer is too thin to see and the metal is still shiny. The 304 steel plate layer is impermeable to water and air, protecting the metal underneath.

For 304 steel, when stainless steel parts such as nuts and bolts are pressed together, the oxide layer can be scraped off, causing the parts to weld together. When disassembled, the weld material may tear and pit, an effect known as galling.

When metal-to-metal wear of 304 steel plate is an issue, this destructive wear can best be avoided by using different materials for the parts that are forcibly joined together, such as bronze and stainless steel, or even different types stainless steel (martensite and austenite). Nitronic alloys reduce the tendency to wear through selective alloying with manganese and nitrogen. Additionally, threaded joints can be lubricated to prevent wear.
