They contain 10.5% to 27% chromium and a very small amount of nickel, if any, but some types may contain lead. Most ingredients include molybdenum; some, aluminum or titanium.

Common ferritic grades include 18Cr-2Mo, 26Cr-1Mo, 29Cr-4Mo and 29Cr-4Mo-2Ni. These alloys may degrade due to the presence of alpha chromium, an intermetallic phase that precipitates during welding.

Martensitic stainless steels are not as corrosion resistant as the other two categories, but are very strong and tough, and are highly machinable and can be hardened by heat treatment. Martensitic stainless steels contain chromium (12 14%), molybdenum (0.2 1%), nickel (less than 2%) and carbon (about 0.1 1%) (making it harder, but the material is more brittle). It is quenched and magnetic.

Precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steels have comparable corrosion resistance to austenitic grades, but can be precipitation hardened to higher strengths than other martensitic grades. The most common 17-4PH uses about 17% chromium and 4% nickel. The Lockheed-Martin Joint Strike Fighter was the first aircraft to use precipitation-hardenable stainless steel Carpenter Custom 465 in its fuselage.

Duplex stainless steels have a mixed microstructure of austenite and ferrite, and the goal is usually to produce a 50/50 mix, although in commercial alloys this ratio may be 40/60. Duplex stainless steels are approximately twice as strong as austenitic stainless steels and also have improved resistance to localized corrosion, particularly pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking.

304 has excellent mechanical properties and is resistant to a variety of corrosive agents. 304/304L stainless steel coils and plates are part of the austenitic stainless steel family. Grade 304 has a lower carbon content than 302 and 304/304L has a lower carbon content than direct grade 304. Types 304 and 304L have very good stretchability and excellent corrosion resistance in chemical, textile, petroleum and food industry exposures.

A super duplex stainless steel is defined as a duplex stainless steel with a pitting corrosion equivalent (PRE) > 40, where PRE = %Cr + 3.3x(%Mo + 0.5x%W) + 16x%N. Usually super duplex steels have a chromium content of 25% or more, some common examples are S32760 (Zeron 100), S32750 (2507) and S32550 (Ferralium), but not all Ferralium grades are super duplex steels.

Grade 304 / 304L stainless steel has a minimum of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. The only difference between them is the carbon content. Type 304 has a maximum carbon of 0.07% .Type 304L has maximum carbon of 0.030 %. This range of carbon in the steels affects the corrosion resistance. 304 / 304L is available in sheet, sheet coil, plate, plate coil, round bar, processed flat bar and tubular products for further manufacturing.
