The main alloying elements are chromium and nickel, but nitrogen, molybdenum, copper, silicon and tungsten can be added to control the structural balance and impart certain corrosion-resistant properties. The corrosion resistance of duplex stainless steels is similar to that of austenitic stainless steels containing similar alloying elements.

The basic idea of dual-phase steel long butt weld flanges is to produce a chemical composition that makes a roughly equal mixture of ferrite and austenite. The chemical composition of duplex steel lap flanges is balanced to produce approximately equal amounts of ferrite and austenite under solution annealed conditions.

These flanges can be hardened by heat treatment. The application industries of duplex steel flanges are; they are used in offshore oil drilling companies, aircraft exhaust manifolds, petrochemicals, power generation, gas processing, pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, burner pipes and spiral welded pipes for fuels, pharmaceutical equipment, Heat exchangers, and seawater equipment. Compared to the corresponding austenitic steels, they are more prone to precipitation of sigma phases, nitrides and carbides, leading to embrittlement and reduced corrosion resistance. Duplex steel pipe flanges are an ultra-steel suitable for use in highly corrosive conditions where very high mechanical strength is required.

This grade, with a tighter specification, is captioned as F60, equating to UNS S32205. Consequently, S32205 can be dual-certified as S31803 but not vice-versa.

Compared with austenitic stainless steel, F51 duplex stainless steel has twice the compressive strength, and compared with 316L and 317L, the designer can reduce its weight.

Duplex 2205 and Super Duplex 2507 stainless steel butt weld flanges feature a high yield strength that is twice the annealed yield strength of typical austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316 stainless steel butt weld flanges. Because of this, Duplex 2205 and Super Duplex 2507 steels are some of the most common duplex grades used for butt weld flanges, with Super Duplex 2507 butt weld flange being the more corrosion resistant grade of the two.

Duplex 2205 is a nitrogen enhanced duplex stainless steel designed to solve common corrosion problems encountered with 300 series stainless steels. “Duplex” describes a family of stainless steels that are neither fully austenitic (such as 304 stainless steel) nor purely ferritic (such as 430 stainless steel). The structure of 2205 duplex stainless steel consists of a pool of austenite surrounded by a continuous ferrite phase. In the annealed condition, 2205 contains approximately 40-50% ferrite. 2205 is often referred to as the workhorse grade and is the most widely used grade in the duplex stainless steel family.

It also has excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, low coefficient of thermal expansion and high thermal conductivity. Due to the low carbon content in the flange, there is minimal risk of carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during heat treatment.

Duplex stainless steel is designed to combine improved resistance to stress corrosion cracking (including sulfide stress corrosion cracking), pitting, crevice corrosion and high strength when compared with other stainless alloys.

The combination of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen give Duplex 2205 flanges good protection from chloride pitting and crevice corrosion, which makes them useful for marine environments, brackish water, bleaching operations, closed loop water systems and some food processing applications.

Super Duplex 2507 Butt Weld Flanges have improved corrosion resistance, making themselves suitable for applications prone to stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, pitting, erosion and general corrosion. Due to the characteristics of duplex and super duplex stainless steel butt weld flanges, they are often used in chemical processing, petrochemical, power industry and seawater equipment.

This means that it derives its superior ductility and corrosion resistance from the austenite in the alloy, and the Werkstoff No 1.4462 BLRF flange has higher strength and hardness, both of which are ferritic part.
