Stainless Steel 316 or 316L SS is a chromium-nickel stainless steel with the addition of molybdenum for improved corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. It is non-magnetic in the annealed state and cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

Grade 316 – Second only to 304 among austenitic stainless steels, this is the standard molybdenum-containing stainless steel, which means it has better overall corrosion resistance than 304, especially pitting and corrosion commonly found in chloride environments crevice corrosion. Grade 310sS (UNS S310s08) is used when the application environment involves wet corrosive agents in a temperature range lower than what is normally considered “high temperature” service. The lower carbon content of 310sS does reduce its high temperature strength compared to 310s.
