316 stainless steel has a better resistance to chemicals and chlorides (like salt) than ss 304. When it comes to applications with chlorinated solutions or exposure to salt, grade 316 stainless steel is considered superior, so it is usally called marine grade stainless steel.

Applications for ASTM a276 Grade 304l round bars must be limited to those applications that require these bars to be joined by welding and do not require excellent tensile strength properties.

316 stainless steel round bar has a very wide range of industrial applications due to its unique performance characteristics, including excellent corrosion resistance and easy formability. Grade 316 stainless steel is differentiated by its molybdenum content, which supports its excellent resistance to oxidation. Grade 316L is a reduced carbon version of the standard Grade 316 and is recommended for applications requiring allergy resistance.

Like other austenitic grades, these grades have excellent toughness even down to low temperatures, although other grades are often used in this environment.
Grade 310sL (and a proprietary version of this grade), a version of the 310s with a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, is sometimes used in very specific corrosive environments, such as urea production.

Stainless Steel 410 Hollow Rod resists grain boundary precipitation structures in the weld heat affected zone, which makes it useful for most welding forms of chemical procedures.
