Grade 304 (aka 1.4301, 1.4037, 18/8, A2) Stainless Steel Round Bars
Grade 304 is the most popular stainless grade. These round bars are easily TIG, ARC and MIG welded and can also be brazed. While grade 304 is not a machinable grade of stainless steel (grade 303 is best for machining), it can be machined under the right conditions.

A479 is a specification for bars and rods produced in several grades of austenitic, ferritic, duplex or simply austenitic-ferritic and martensitic stainless steels. Since this designated stainless steel A479 round bar can be produced in any of the above grades, it can be heat treated differently.

Cold-drawn stainless steel bars are cold-finished, which means they are further processed after hot rolling. The hot-rolled and cold-drawn process helps improve bar dimensional tolerances, straightness, surface appearance, and overall physical properties. Certain types of equipment, such as medical machinery, are very sensitive to even low levels of magnetism, so it is important to source the correct type of stainless steel bar and bar for these critical environments. So 304, 304l, 316, 316l and 347 are excellent choices.

The absolute roughness of hot rolled stainless steel round bars is higher than that of drawn bars. This is not a problem when rebar is only used for strength and corrosion resistance properties. ASTM is the American Society for Testing and Materials, and A479 is “Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Bars and Sections for Use in Boilers and Other Pressure Vessels.” This general supply specification defines composition and mechanical property requirements for various stainless steel bars, whether hot or cold worked, round, hexagonal or square, and hot rolled or extruded shapes such as angles, tees and channels . It also includes basic details on sampling and certification requirements, product marking and particle size requirements.

Grade 316L is a low carbon version of grade 316 stainless steel with increased resistance to surface corrosion and can be used in the same temperature range. It is also more commonly used in applications that require large size components to be welded. Although the 316/316L is widely considered the default choice for applications requiring marine grade products, it has reduced performance in warm salt water.

Since a276 grade 316 rods are resistant not only to acetic acid but also to phosphoric acid, they are part of equipment used in fertilizer manufacturing, textile processing, and the pharmaceutical industry. Another use for ASTM A479 Grade 316 bars is that they can be used as components in the food and beverage industry because the alloy is recognized as a hygienic and non-toxic alloy.

The ASTM A479 specification covers stainless steel hot and cold worked bars, including round, square, and hexagonal, as well as hot rolled or extruded shapes such as angles, tees, and channels for boiler and pressure vessel construction. Four grades of stainless steel are available, including austenitic, austenitic-ferritic, ferritic and martensitic grades. Mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness, shall be determined for specimens subjected to normalized, tempered, annealed, and quenched conditions. Austenitic stainless steels shall be heat treated and subjected to corrosion tests.

Applications for ASTM a276 Grade 304l round bars must be limited to those applications that require these bars to be joined by welding and do not require excellent tensile strength properties.

Applications for 410 stainless steel rods are valve and pump parts, fasteners, cutlery, turbine parts and bushings.

Our 347 stainless steel bars are extremely resistant to prolonged heat and corrosion, making them ideal for power generation, engines, welded fabrication and other high temperature applications. Also known as UNS S34700 bars, these 347 stainless steel bars have superior creep and stress rupture properties compared to other grades such as 304 stainless steel, with excellent mechanical properties.
