Stainless steel round bars are available in three grades. 304 is the most common grade with easy weldability, good formability and corrosion resistance. Like grade 304, it is also easy to weld, but more difficult to machine. Finally, grade 303 is easier to machine, drill and cut than other grades. However, it is not as suitable for welding as grades 304 and 316.

Stainless Steel 316 or 316L SS is a chromium-nickel stainless steel with the addition of molybdenum for improved corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. It is non-magnetic in the annealed state and cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

There are different specifications that also specify production and application types. ASTM A276 Stainless Steel Bar is the specification for hot rolled and cold drawn bar, except for forged bar. F55 round steel is produced by a combination of rolling and forging. They are used for application flame hardening where the surface hardness needs to meet the general standard of ASTM A182 F55. Another bar standard, UNS S32760 F55 Rods, has a high fatigue strength of 450 MPa and a modulus of elasticity of 200 GPa.

Grade 304 (aka 1.4301, 1.4037, 18/8, A2) Stainless Steel Round Bars
Grade 304 is the most popular stainless grade. These round bars are easily TIG, ARC and MIG welded and can also be brazed. While grade 304 is not a machinable grade of stainless steel (grade 303 is best for machining), it can be machined under the right conditions.

ASTM is the American Society for Testing and Materials, and A479 is “Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Bars and Sections for Use in Boilers and Other Pressure Vessels.” This general supply specification defines composition and mechanical property requirements for various stainless steel bars, whether hot or cold worked, round, hexagonal or square, and hot rolled or extruded shapes such as angles, tees and channels . It also includes basic details on sampling and certification requirements, product marking and particle size requirements.

Grade 310 stainless steel, combining excellent high temperature performance with good ductility and weldability, designed for high temperature service. In the absence of reducing sulfur gas, it resists oxidation in continuous operation at temperatures up to 1150¡ãC. It can also be used for intermittent service at temperatures up to 1040¡ãC.

The benefits of using stainless steel 304/304L round bars include low carbon content, which eliminates carbon precipitation during welding. Stainless steel 304L round bars have higher tensile yield strength and have low temperature properties that respond well to cold work hardening.

This is due to the increased hardness and tensile strength properties of cold-worked bars. In cold-worked conditions, ASME SA479 Grade 316 Round Bars may be slightly magnetic and can therefore be used in applications requiring magnetic properties. ASME SA276 Type 316 Rod Offers higher magnification not only in corrosion resistance but also in mechanical properties such as yield strength, creep strength and hardness compared to other austenitic stainless grades 304.

Magnetic Response of Stainless Steel
Magnetic response is the attractive force of steel to a magnet. Austenitic grades are generally not magnetic, although a magnetic response can be induced in low austenitic grades by cold working. High nickel grades such as 316 and 310 will remain non-magnetic even when cold worked. All other grades are magnetic.

The steel of UNS S31254 is a super austenitic stainless steel. They are high-end stainless steels designed for impact toughness against chloride crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking and pitting corrosion. These are austenites with high nickel and chromium content.

The standard for ASTM A276 specification covers both, hot -finished or cold-finished stainless steel bars with the exception of re-forged bars. The ASTM A276 Type 304 is one of the most commonly used and versatile grades of stainless steel.
