The high chromium and moderate nickel content of 310S stainless steel allow these steels to be used in H2S-containing reduced sulfur atmospheres. They are widely used in moderate carburizing atmospheres, such as those encountered in petrochemical environments. For more severe carburizing atmospheres, other heat-resistant alloys should be selected. Grade 310 is not recommended for frequent liquid quenching due to thermal shock. Due to its toughness and low magnetic permeability, this grade is often used in low temperature applications.

304 and 304L can be specified in annealed conditions with very good formability. Higher nickel versions can be specified for enhanced multi-stage deep drawing characteristics. For spring type applications, Types 304/304L can also be specified in higher strength cold work conditions. Type 304/304L is non-magnetic in the annealed condition, but may become slightly magnetic by cold working.

Manufacturing 310/310S stainless steel pipe is forged in the temperature range of 975 – 1175¡ãC. The heavy lifting takes place at 1050¡ãC, and a lightweight finish is applied to the bottom of the range. Annealing after forging is recommended to remove all stress during forging. Stainless Steel 310/310S is an austenitic heat resistant alloy with excellent oxidation resistance under mild cycling conditions up to 2000¡ãF. Type 304L can be dual certified as 304 when the composition meets the lower carbon limit of 304L and a slightly higher 304 strength level. Stainless steel types 304 or 304L are also known as 18/8 stainless steels because their chemical composition includes approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel by weight. They are widely used in the food and beverage processing industry because of their ease of forming and welding and their strong corrosion resistance. Types 304 and 304L have very similar chemical and mechanical properties. The only difference between them is the carbon content; 304 stainless steel has a maximum carbon content range of 0.08%, while 304L has a maximum carbon content range of 0.03%.

For 304L stainless steel pipe, the range of carbon content in the steel affects the corrosion resistance of the tank. During the welding of steel, a phenomenon called “chromium carbide precipitation” occurs at temperatures between 800 and 1500¡ãF (425 and 815¡ãC). Chromium combines with carbon in the heat affected zone and precipitates as chromium carbide at grain boundaries. As a result, it significantly reduces the corrosion resistance of the steel in this area. Due to the lower carbon content of 304L steel, the risk of chromium carbide precipitation is greatly reduced.

304l pipe has good oxidation resistance in intermittent duty up to 870¡ãC and continuous duty up to 925¡ãC. However, continuous use at 425-860¡ãC is not recommended. In this case, 304L is recommended because of its resistance to carbide precipitation. Where high strength is required at temperatures above 500¡ãC and up to 800¡ãC, Grade 304H is recommended. This material will remain resistant to water corrosion.

304l stainless steel is easy to work harden. Manufacturing methods involving cold working may require an intermediate annealing stage to mitigate work hardening and avoid tearing or cracking. When fabrication is complete, a full annealing operation should be employed to reduce internal stress and optimize corrosion resistance.

304l stainless steel pipe has good machinability. Machining can be enhanced using the following rules: The cutting edge must remain sharp. Blunt edges can lead to excessive work hardening. The cuts should be light but deep enough to prevent work hardening on the surface of the material. A chip breaker should be used to help ensure that the chips remain concentrated at the cutting edge. This means that coolants and lubricants are required and must be used in large quantities.

304l stainless steel cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Solution treatment or annealing can be rapidly cooled after heating to 1010-1120¡ãC.

Fusion weldability of Type 304l stainless steel is excellent with or without fillers. The recommended filler rod and electrode for use with 304 stainless steel is grade 308 stainless steel. For 304L, the recommended packing is 308L. Heavy welded sections may require post weld annealing. The 304L does not require this step. If post weld heat treatment is not possible, grade 321 can be used.

Stainless steel 304l gets its name because of the interaction between its alloying composition and the environment to which they are exposed to resist rusting. Many types of stainless steel have multiple uses and there is a lot of overlap. All stainless steels contain at least 10% chromium. But not all stainless steels are created equal.

304L stainless pipe has slightly lower mechanical properties than standard 304 grades, but is still widely used due to its versatility. Like Type 304 stainless steel, it is commonly used in beer brewing and winemaking, but is also used outside of the food industry, such as chemical containers, mining and construction. It is ideal for metal parts such as nuts and bolts exposed to salt water.

The increased nickel content in 316 SS helps improve its corrosion resistance compared to 304. Therefore, 316 is recommended for use in coastal areas with increased salt content, or in areas with high levels of polluting or corrosive chemicals, especially chlorides.
