Duplex 2205 bolts (EN 1.4462 ) are made of austenitic-ferritic stainless steel and are designed to provide higher strength and corrosion resistance than 300 series stainless steels. It helps users avoid stress corrosion cracking common to 316 and 317. The structure of 2205 duplex stainless steel consists of a pool of austenite surrounded by a continuous ferrite phase. 2205 is the most widely used duplex (ferritic/austenitic) grade of stainless steel. It is used due to its excellent corrosion resistance and high strength. Over the years, many steel suppliers have made improvements to the standard duplex S31803 composition, and the resulting restricted composition range was recognized as UNS S32205 in 1996.

It is neither like the welding heat affected zone of ferritic stainless steel, because of the grain coarsening, the plastic toughness is greatly reduced, nor like austenitic stainless steel, it is more sensitive to welding hot cracks.

Stainless steel grade UNS S31803 is highly resistant to intergranular corrosion due to its low carbon content, which prevents carbide precipitation at grain boundaries.
