ASTM A479 Round Bar has one important thing going for them: they are made from stainless steel. Stainless Steel 316 or 316L SS is a chromium-nickel stainless steel with the addition of molybdenum for improved corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. It is non-magnetic in the annealed state and cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

17-7PH provides high strength and hardness with minimal deformation under heat treatment. The alloy has good formability and excellent fatigue properties with good corrosion resistance.

All stainless steels are iron-based alloys containing at least about 10.5% chromium. The chromium in the alloy forms a self-healing protective transparent oxide layer. This oxide layer makes stainless steel corrosion resistant. The self-healing nature of the oxide layer means that corrosion resistance remains the same regardless of the manufacturing method. Even if the surface of the material is cut or damaged, it will heal itself and remain corrosion resistant.
