High carbon steel and ultra-high carbon steel are very strong and are used in springs and high strength products. These alloys can be tempered to very high hardness without becoming brittle and are used in very high wear applications. The carbon content of these alloys is 0.6-0.99% high carbon steel and 1.0-2.0% ultra-high carbon steel.

904L washers are made of a non-stabilized low carbon high alloy austenitic stainless steel. The addition of copper to this grade gives it greatly improved resistance to strong reducing acids, particularly sulphuric acid. It is also highly resistant to chloride attack ¨C both pitting / crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. This grade is non-magnetic in all conditions and has excellent weldability and formability. The austenitic structure also gives this grade excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures. Due to its intrinsic anti-corrosive properties, 904L can be made into bolts, nuts, washers, studs, socket head cap screws, as well as a wide variety of other fasteners.

A finished hex nut, also known as a standard hex nut, has a smaller width across the flats and corners compared to a heavy hex nut. Heavy hex nuts are thicker and heavier in weight.
