Like other austenitic grades, these grades have excellent toughness even down to low temperatures, although other grades are often used in this environment.
Grade 310sL (and a proprietary version of this grade), a version of the 310s with a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, is sometimes used in very specific corrosive environments, such as urea production.

The absolute roughness of hot rolled stainless steel round bars is higher than that of drawn bars. This is not a problem when rebar is only used for strength and corrosion resistance properties. But when the bar is used for aesthetic applications and outdoor fixtures, cold drawn stainless steel round bar is preferred because of its smooth surface and less absolute roughness. Our 347 stainless steel bars are extremely resistant to prolonged heat and corrosion, making them ideal for power generation, engines, welded fabrication and other high temperature applications. Also known as UNS S34700 bars, these 347 stainless steel bars have superior creep and stress rupture properties compared to other grades such as 304 stainless steel, with excellent mechanical properties.

Grades 303 and 304 are interchangeable in many cases, but the composition of each grade is slightly different, making either of them the obvious choice for certain applications.

Like many scientific discoveries, the origin of stainless steel was an accident. In 1913, Sheffield, England, Harry Brearley was working on the development of a new steel alloy for gun barrels. He noticed that some of his samples did not rust and were difficult to etch. These alloys contain approximately 13% chromium.
