The steel of UNS S31254 is a super austenitic stainless steel. They are high-end stainless steels designed for impact toughness against chloride crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking and pitting corrosion. These are austenites with high nickel and chromium content.

Grade 310sS (UNS S310s08) is used when the application environment involves wet corrosive agents in a temperature range lower than what is normally considered “high temperature” service. The lower carbon content of 310sS does reduce its high temperature strength compared to 310s.

About the hot strength of stainless steel bars
Austenitic grades maintain high strength at elevated temperatures. This is especially true for grades with high levels of chromium and/or silicon, nitrogen and rare earth elements such as grades 310 and S30815. High chromium ferritic steels like 446 can also exhibit high hot strength. The high chromium content of stainless steel also helps resist scaling at high temperatures.

Stainless Steel 310 Round Bar is a robust austenitic stainless steel grade bar used in a variety of industries. Applications include chemical, brewing, petrochemical, food processing and many other industries. Stainless steel 310 round bars are available in different sizes according to EN, DIN, JIS, ASTM, BS, ASME and AISI codes.

All stainless steels are iron-based alloys containing at least about 10.5% chromium. The chromium in the alloy forms a self-healing protective transparent oxide layer. This oxide layer makes stainless steel corrosion resistant. The self-healing nature of the oxide layer means that corrosion resistance remains the same regardless of the manufacturing method. Even if the surface of the material is cut or damaged, it will heal itself and remain corrosion resistant. Conversely, plain carbon steel can be protected from corrosion by painting or other coatings such as galvanizing.

Another advantage of grade 304 stainless steel bar over grade 303 is that it is slightly harder and has better corrosion resistance. Because of this, grade 304 stainless steel bar is used in large quantities in the manufacture of fasteners and fixtures such as nuts, bolts, washers, clips, fittings and clamps. Products made from grade 304 stainless steel in the fastener industry are often referred to as “A2”.

The SS 304L electrode is a variant of Type 304 with a lower carbon content to improve weldability and reduce the risk of reduced corrosion resistance around the weld. For severely corrosive environments, lower levels of SS 304L Bars were chosen due to its excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion. The industries that mainly use this level are nuclear power, general engineering, etc.

347 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel with excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion when exposed to chromium carbide precipitation temperatures ranging from 800 to 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. Alloy 347 with tantalum – tantalum (known as niobium) has good mechanical properties at high temperatures.

Grade 304 (aka 1.4301, 1.4037, 18/8, A2) Stainless Steel Round Bars
Grade 304 is the most popular stainless grade. These round bars are easily TIG, ARC and MIG welded and can also be brazed. While grade 304 is not a machinable grade of stainless steel (grade 303 is best for machining), it can be machined under the right conditions.

Type 347 stainless steel has slightly improved corrosion resistance in strongly oxidizing environments than Type 321 stainless steel. Type 347 is stabilized with columbium and is more suitable for aqueous and low temperature environments due to its good resistance to intergranular corrosion. Both 347 and 321 have good resistance to polythionate stress corrosion cracking encountered in refineries. The high temperature oxidation resistance of 347 is similar to that of 304 stainless steel.
