The combination of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen gives 2205 good resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. The flange is second most used joining method after selding. Flanges are used when joints need dismantling. It provides flexibility for maintenance. Flange connects the pipe with various equipment and valves. Breakup flanges are added in the pipeline system if regular maintenance in required during plant operation.
A flanged joint is composed of three separate and independent although interrdlated components; the flanges, the gaskets, and the bolting; which are assembled by yet another influence, the fitter. Special controls are required in the selection and application of all there elements to attain a joint, which has acceptable leak tightness.
A flange is a protruded ridge, lip or rim, either external or internal, that serves to increase strength (as the flange of an iron beam such as an I-beam or a T-beam); for easy attachment/transfer of contact force with another object (as the flange on the end of a pipe, steam cylinder, etc., or on the lens mount of a camera); or for stabilizing and guiding the movements of a machine or its parts (as the inside flange of a rail car or tram wheel, which keep the wheels from running off the rails). Alloy 2205 duplex stainless steel plate has better pitting and crevice corrosion resistance than 316L or 317L austenitic stainless steel in almost all corrosive media.

Alloy 2507 has 25% chromium, 4% molybdenum, and 7% nickel. This high molybdenum, chromium and nitrogen content results in excellent resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion attack and the duplex structure provides 2507 with exceptional resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking.

The advantages of duplex steels include: good weldability and machinability, high resistance to corrosion fatigue, resistance to stress corrosion cracking (especially chloride stress corrosion cracking), erosion and high energy absorption.

Duplex stainless steel, alloy 2205 was designed as comprising 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel nitrogen. Alloy 2205 combines the desirable aspect of properties of both austenitic and ferritic grades.

The service temperature of 2205 duplex stainless steel should be limited to below 600¡ãF. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can make 2205 stainless steel brittle.

The structure of 2205 duplex stainless steel consists of a pool of austenite surrounded by a continuous ferrite phase. In the annealed condition, 2205 contains approximately 40-50% ferrite. 2205 is often referred to as the workhorse grade and is the most widely used grade in the duplex stainless steel family.

2205 duplex stainless steel is more than double that of ordinary austenitic stainless steel. This characteristic allows designers to reduce weight when designing products, giving this alloy a price advantage over 316,317L.

Duplex is a metal that is made of a two-phase microstructure consisting of austenitic stainless steel and ferritic structures.

Super Duplex has all the benefits of other duplex steels, specifically the strength benefits of their biphasic structural composition of equal parts austenitic and ferritic stainless steel. This microstructure makes all duplex steels around twice as strong as regular single structure ferritic or austenitic steels, but Super Duplex has a higher chromium and molybdenum content, giving it considerably increased resistance to corrosion than its counterparts.
