Stress corrosion cracking occurs when stainless steels are subjected to tensile stress, while in contact with solutions containing chlorides. Increasing temperatures also increase the susceptibility of stainless steels to stress corrosion cracking.

2205 is the most widely used duplex (ferritic/austenitic) grade of stainless steel. It is used due to its excellent corrosion resistance and high strength. The flanges shall not be used at temperatures over 600¡ãF [315¡ãC] since it may be subject to embrittlement after service at moderately elevated temperatures.
