The advantageous properties of stainless steel can be seen compared to standard plain carbon low carbon steels, like 304, 304l, 316, 316l and 347. The ASTM A479 specification covers hot-rolled and cold-rolled stainless steel bar, including round, square, and hexagonal, as well as hot-rolled or extruded shapes for boiler and pressure vessel construction, such as angles, tees, and channels. Four grades of stainless steel are available, including austenitic, austenitic-ferritic, ferritic and martensitic grades. Mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness, shall be determined for specimens subjected to normalized, tempered, annealed, and quenched conditions.

F55 is the common industry name for UNS S32760 stainless steel. Industry uses ASTM A276 F55 Duplex Round Bar because of its high mechanical strength and resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. It is available in thicknesses from 3 to 12 mm and in ISO tolerance classes h11, h11-DIN 1013. It is a ductile product and can therefore be used in railway engines and passenger cars.

316 stainless steel has a better resistance to chemicals and chlorides (like salt) than ss 304. When it comes to applications with chlorinated solutions or exposure to salt, grade 316 stainless steel is considered superior, so it is usally called marine grade stainless steel.

The Stainless Steel 304 Round Bar, as the name suggests is made up of 304 grade stainless steel material. It has around 18% chromium and 8% nickel in its chemical composition. The round bar shows high resistance to corrosion and enhanced strength properties. The material is quite strong with around 515 Mpa min tensile strength and min yield strength of 205 MPa.

Applications for ASTM a276 Grade 304l round bars must be limited to those applications that require these bars to be joined by welding and do not require excellent tensile strength properties.

In fact, in most non-specialized environments or installations, it may be better to use lower grades of heat resistance such as 304, 304l, 316, and 347 stainless steel bar.

Low temperature resistance properties of stainless steel bars
Low temperature resistance is measured by ductility or toughness at subzero temperatures. At low temperatures, the tensile strength of austenitic stainless steels is significantly higher than ambient temperature. They also maintain excellent toughness. Ferritic, martensitic and precipitation hardening steels should not be used at sub-zero temperatures. The toughness of these grades drops significantly at low temperatures. In some cases, this drop occurred near room temperature.

The steel of UNS S31254 is a super austenitic stainless steel. They are high-end stainless steels designed for impact toughness against chloride crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking and pitting corrosion. These are austenites with high nickel and chromium content.

Grade 316L is a low carbon version of grade 316 stainless steel with increased resistance to surface corrosion and can be used in the same temperature range. It is also more commonly used in applications that require large size components to be welded. Although the 316/316L is widely considered the default choice for applications requiring marine grade products, it has reduced performance in warm salt water.

Stainless steel 410 square bars are also very resistant to hydrochloric acid at all temperatures and concentrations. Grade 410 stainless steel is a general-purpose martensitic stainless steel containing 11.5% chromium with good corrosion resistance. However, through a series of processes such as quenching, tempering, and polishing, the corrosion resistance of grade 410 steel can be further enhanced. Quenching and tempering can harden grade 410 steel. They are typically used in applications involving mild corrosion, heat resistance and high strength.

Because Alloy 316 is extremely ductile, it can be easily formed into a variety of shapes. While stainless steel 316 round bars can be hot worked, many manufacturers prefer cold worked bars.

904l stainless steel round bar is an austenitic grade alloy. The added molybdenum content in stainless steel 904L square bar alloy gives it excellent resistance to localized corrosion such as pitting and crevice corrosion if compared to alloy grade 316l.

Stainless Steel 410 Hollow Rod resists grain boundary precipitation structures in the weld heat affected zone, which makes it useful for most welding forms of chemical procedures. These stainless steel 410 hex bars have good resistance to stress corrosion cracking and pitting corrosion. Well, the low carbon content in these stainless steel 410 triangular bars minimizes grain boundary carbide precipitation throughout the welding process, designed to maintain corrosion resistance in the heat affected zone of the welded joint.

ASTM A638 Grade 660 alloy is a precipitation hardening stainless steel suitable for high temperature applications. This grade is suitable for applications requiring good corrosion resistance and high strength at temperatures up to 700°C. It can be used for lower stress applications at higher temperatures.

Characteristics of 304: As a heat-resistant grade, 304 stainless steel bar has good corrosion resistance to many chemical corrosive agents and industrial environments. And with good formability, 304 can be easily welded by all common methods. An ultra-low carbon variant called 304L avoids harmful carbide precipitation from welding. This variation provides the same corrosion resistance as 304, but with slightly lower mechanical properties.

Hardening properties of stainless steel
The advantage of work-hardenable grades of stainless steel is that the strength of the metal can be significantly increased simply by cold working. A combination of cold working and annealing stages can be employed to impart a specific strength to the manufactured part. A typical example is wire drawing. The wire used as the spring will be work hardened to a specific tensile strength. If the same wire is used as a bendable tie wire, it is annealed, resulting in a softer material.
