The achievable mechanical properties depend on added elements such as nickel, chromium, molybdenum and vanadium. The following are a series of improved properties of alloy steel (compared to carbon steel): strength, hardness, toughness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, hardenability and hot hardness. To achieve some of these improved properties, the metal may require heat treatment.

Steel flanges provide an easy access for cleaning, inspection or modification. They usually come in round shapes but they can also come in square and rectangular forms. Alloy 20 (Alloy 20) is an iron-based austenitic alloy developed to resist sulfuric acid corrosion. It has excellent resistance to sulfuric acid corrosion; it has strong resistance to phosphoric acid, nitric acid and chloride environments, chloride stress corrosion, pitting corrosion and crack corrosion. 800H can resist corrosion of many corrosive media. Its high nickel content makes it resistant to stress corrosion cracking in aqueous corrosion conditions. The high chromium content provides better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion cracking. The alloy has good corrosion resistance to nitric acid and organic acids, but limited corrosion resistance in sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid. Good corrosion resistance in oxidizing and non-oxidizing salts, in addition to the potential for pitting corrosion in halides. It also has good corrosion resistance in water, steam and mixtures of steam, air and carbon dioxide.

A335 P22 is a seamless tube made of ferritic alloy stainless steel. Chemically, the alloy of SA335 P22 material contains trace amounts of carbon, manganese, sulfur, silicon and phosphorus. The main additives in the alloy are molybdenum and chromium, which give stainless steel excellent mechanical properties. Tensile strength, corrosion resistance, hardness and other properties are enhanced and improved. Molybdenum reduces the brittleness caused by the addition of chromium.

ASTM A193 Grade B7 bolts and studs are made from chrome molybdenum steel and are quenched and tempered (heat treated) to achieve the desired mechanical properties (strength). Grade B7 is the most commonly used A193 bolt grade in construction.
