The achievable mechanical properties depend on added elements such as nickel, chromium, molybdenum and vanadium. The following are a series of improved properties of alloy steel (compared to carbon steel): strength, hardness, toughness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, hardenability and hot hardness. To achieve some of these improved properties, the metal may require heat treatment.

ASTM A182 F5 flanges are forged flanges made of chrome molybdenum low alloy steel called 5Cr-0.5Mo, UNS designation K41545. Widely used in oil refineries, chemical and petrochemical, power plant pipelines, heat exchangers, various pressure vessels and other pressure and high temperature services.

Alloy Steel F12 slip on Flanges are made up of chromium molybdenum steel alloy and therefore have a high rupture resistance. Alloy 20 (Alloy 20) is an iron-based austenitic alloy developed to resist sulfuric acid corrosion. It must be slid into the pipe before welding. In this case, it’s a double weld on both sides (i.e. inside and outside), so it provides durability that helps avoid leaks.

Due to the chemical composition of Molybdenum (Mo) and Chromium (Cr), A335 is often referred to as Chromium Molybdenum Tube. Molybdenum increases the strength of the steel as well as the elastic limit, wear resistance, impact quality and hardenability. Molybdenum increases resistance to softening, inhibits grain growth, and makes chromium steel less susceptible to embrittlement. Molybdenum is the most effective single additive for improving high temperature creep strength. It also enhances the corrosion resistance of the steel and inhibits pitting corrosion. Chromium (or chrome) is the basic component of stainless steel. Any steel with 12% or more chromium is considered stainless steel. Chromium is almost irreplaceable in terms of resistance to oxidation at high temperatures. Chromium increases tensile, yield and hardness at room temperature.
