254 SMO is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel developed for use in aggressive chloride-bearing media or seawater applications. The 254 SMO is characterised by its high chromium content, this is further complemented by its molybdenum and nitrogen content which gives 254 SMO excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Since these oil storage tanks are located in the Arabian Gulf (saline conditions) the use of this material was an optimal solution for the environment. The function of stainless steel flange is actually to connect the pipe end with the pipe end. There are flange eyelets on the flange edge, and the stainless steel bolts make the two flanges to be matched tightly. When connecting, gaskets, PTFE gaskets, metal gaskets, silicon gaskets, etc. are required between flanges for sealing.

SAE 304 stainless steel is the most common stainless steel. The steel contains both chromium (between 18% and 20%) and nickel (between 8% and 10.5%)[1] metals as the main non-iron constituents. It is an austenitic stainless steel. It is less electrically and thermally conductive than carbon steel. It is magnetic, but less magnetic than steel. It has a higher corrosion resistance than regular steel and is widely used because of the ease in which it is formed into various shapes.[1]

The molybdenum content increases corrosion resistance, improves resistance to pitting in chloride ion solutions, and increases strength at high temperatures.

Although both of these steels are considered low carbon steel alloys, they are quite different. For example, “L” stands for “low” in 316l stainless steel, meaning the alloy has a very low carbon content. The 316l variant is also more resistant to solder corrosion and can withstand higher temperatures than the 316. This is why 316l is often used in marine and architectural projects.

SMO 254 tube is highly alloyed and has corrosion resistance comparable to high performance austenitic steels. SMO 254 seamless pipe does not corrode, rust or get wet like regular steel.

For certain applications, grade 254 SMO has been reported to be a cost-effective substitute for high nickel and titanium alloys.

316L, however, is a better choice for a project that requires a lot of welding because 316 is more susceptible to weld decay than 316L (corrosion within the weld).

The low carbon content of 304/304L stainless steel limits the formation of harmful carbides such that this grade is safe for most operations in welded structures, and the service temperature is limited to 800¡ãF. Both hardness and tensile strength can be increased by cold work, which can lead to slight magnetism.

It is more resistant to chemical corrosion than conventional chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels such as 304 alloy. In addition, compared with conventional stainless steel, 317L alloy has higher ductility, stress corrosion resistance, compressive strength and high temperature resistance. It is a low carbon grade or L grade, which is resistant to sensitization during welding and heat treatment.
