Grade 1.4404 or 316L is an austenitic stainless steel AISI 316 with very good corrosion resistance due to its high chromium and molybdenum content and low carbon content. Its strength in the hardened state is about 600 MPa for large diameters, but for small sections, the strength can be increased by cold working. It has good corrosion resistance to organic substances, and has good corrosion resistance to several strong acids (acetic acid, phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid) and seawater. They experience pitting and crevice corrosion in the presence of hot chloride solutions, and stress corrosion when temperatures exceed 60¡ãC. They are not resistant to contact with hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids, aqua regia, iron and magnesium chloride.
