For 304L stainless steel pipe, the range of carbon content in the steel affects the corrosion resistance of the tank. During the welding of steel, a phenomenon called “chromium carbide precipitation” occurs at temperatures between 800 and 1500¡ãF (425 and 815¡ãC). Chromium combines with carbon in the heat affected zone and precipitates as chromium carbide at grain boundaries. As a result, it significantly reduces the corrosion resistance of the steel in this area. Due to the lower carbon content of 304L steel, the risk of chromium carbide precipitation is greatly reduced.

SAE 304 stainless steel is the most common stainless steel. The steel contains both chromium (between 18% and 20%) and nickel (between 8% and 10.5%)[1] metals as the main non-iron constituents. It is an austenitic stainless steel. It is less electrically and thermally conductive than carbon steel. It is magnetic, but less magnetic than steel. It has a higher corrosion resistance than regular steel and is widely used because of the ease in which it is formed into various shapes.[1]

The most basic difference between grade 304 and grade 316 stainless steels is that 316 tends to have more nickel and a bit of molybdenum in the mix. The general mechanical properties of the two metals are mostly comparable. The increased nickel content and the inclusion of molybdenum allows for grade 316 stainless steel to have better chemical resistance than 304 stainless steel. Stainless Steel 316 is the standard molybdenum-bearing grade, second in importance to SS 304 amongst the austenitic stainless steels.

A flange is a ring of steel (forged, cut from plate, or rolled) designed to connect sections of pipe, or to join pipe to a pressure vessel, valve, pump or other integral flanged assembly. Though 310 is ideal for high temperature use, it should not be exposed to the severe thermal shock of repeated liquid quenching or where aqueous corrosive contaminants are present.
