Grade 304 / 304L stainless steel has a minimum of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. The only difference between them is the carbon content. Type 304 has a maximum carbon of 0.07% .Type 304L has maximum carbon of 0.030 %. 321 Stainless Steel (UNS S32100/ASTM A193 B8T) is a very close relative. While 347 stainless steel is stabilized by the addition of niobium and tantalum to resist intergranular corrosion, 321 is stabilized by the addition of titanium. By adding niobium and tantalum, this material prevents the formation of chromium carbides. Since these elements have a stronger affinity for carbon than chromium, niobium-tantalum carbide precipitates within the grains rather than forming at the grain boundaries.

With nickel 25% and molybdenum 4.5%, ASTM B625 UNS N08904 provides good resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting and general corrosion, which are superior to 316L and 317L.
