AL6XN is primarily used for its improved pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chlorides. It is a formable and weldable stainless steel.

It is an austenitic stainless steel. It is less electrically and thermally conductive than carbon steel. It is magnetic, but less magnetic than steel. It has a higher corrosion resistance than regular steel and is widely used because of the ease in which it is formed into various shapes.[1]

Austenitic stainless steels are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in halide environments. Conditions that produce SCC are: (1) the presence of halide ions (usually chloride ions), (2) residual tensile stress, and (3) temperatures in excess of about 120¡ãF (49¡ãC).

Type 316L stainless steel requires weld annealing only in high stress applications.

316 contains many similar chemical and mechanical properties to 304 stainless steel. To the naked eye, the two metals look the same. However, the chemical composition of 316, consisting of 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum, is the main difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel.

317L is non-magnetic in the annealed condition but may become slightly magnetic as a result of welding.Fittings supplied under this specification shall be examined visually for surface discontinuities, surface checks, and mechanical marks.
