Nickel Alloy 400 and Monel 400, also known as UNS N04400, is a ductile nickel-copper-based alloy consisting primarily of two-thirds nickel and one-third copper. Nickel Alloy 400 is known for its resistance to a variety of corrosive conditions, including alkalis (or acids), salt water, hydrofluoric acid, and sulfuric acid. Alloy C276 is a nickel, chromium and molybdenum alloy. Hastelloy C276 is designed for excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance in a variety of environments. These alloys also show resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.

While both 304 and 316 stainless steels are strong, the addition of molybdenum to 316 gives it a slight advantage over 304 in strength. With 316 stainless steel, you can expect better resistance to chloride corrosion and pitting than 304 stainless steel, as well as higher strength at elevated temperatures.

Mild steel, it is a type of carbon steel. Carbon is present in all steels and when carbon is the main alloying element in steel it is called carbon steel. On the other hand, the amount of carbon present in the steel determines the type or grade of carbon steel. Mild steel has the lowest carbon content of any steel, but that doesn’t make it less useful. In fact, mild steel is the most commonly used steel grade, accounting for 85% of total U.S. steel production.

All grades of ASTM A694 F42 shall be heat treated. Heat treatment of carbon steels and high strength low alloy steels can include normalizing, normalizing and tempering, or quenching and tempering. The heat treatment of alloy steel may include normalizing and precipitation heat treatment or quenching and precipitation heat treatment. The tempering temperature should be at least 1000¡ãF [540¡ãC]. Precipitation heat treatment for alloy steels should be in the range of 1000 to 1225 ¡ãF [540 to 665 ¡ãC].

Generally speaking, the carbon-free content of carbon steel pipe flanges is lower than that of molten flanges. They don’t oxidize very quickly. They are flat and fairly light in construction, and the fused flanges have excellent mechanical properties. Improper forging methods often result in broad or irregular grains; hardening cracks and forging are taller than cast flanges.
