Duplex stainless steel offers excellent resistance to corrosion and very high mechanical strength. The high chromium, molybdenum, and nickel levels provide excellent resistance to pitting, crevice, and general corrosion.

It is also exceptionally resistance to chloride SCC. Flanges are supplied with pitting resistance equivalent that is assuring very good pitting corrosion resistance.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel plate has excellent corrosion resistance, much higher than grade 316. It can withstand localized corrosion types such as intergranular, pitting and crevice.

The 2205 duplex stainless steel pipe also demonstrates good fatigue strength, as well as outstanding resistance to stress related corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, pitting, erosion corrosion, and general corrosion in severe environments.

Unlike the conventionally used austenitic 300 series stainless steels, duplex stainless steels generally have exaggerated properties. Duplex tube suppliers recommend using only this alloy as it combines both properties to produce positive results.

Duplex stainless steels have a microstructure which is 50% ferritic and 50% austenitic. This composition gives them a better strength than either ferritic or austenitic steels. Further details about this topic are given below (see ASTM A790 pipes).

Super Duplex UNS S32760 is one of the most common super duplex grades on the market. UNS S32760 is a duplex stainless steel designed for use in corrosive chlorine-containing environments, with the addition of W and Cu compared to UNS S32750.

Although when the 2205 duplex stainless tubing material has been exposed to temperatures above 572¡ãF, even when the exposure is for a short period of time, the duplex 2205 seamless tube is subject to embrittlement.

ASTM A815 specification covers two general classes, WP and CR, of wrought ferritic, ferritic/austenitic, and martensitic stainless steel fittings of seamless and welded construction. Class WP fittings are subdivided into four subclasses: Classes WP-S, WP-W, WP-WX, and WP-WU. The material for fittings shall consist of forgings, bars, plates, or seamless or welded tubular products.

2205 fasteners are widely used in applications requiring good corrosion resistance and strength. Has excellent corrosion resistance; much higher than other grades. It eliminates localized corrosion types such as intergranular corrosion, pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion. Duplex 2205 bolts are ideal for environments containing chlorides and hydrogen sulfide for oil and gas extraction from sour wells, refineries, and chloride-contaminated process solutions.

Thread friction between the nut and bolt creates a strong, steady and even force holding the componenuts together. The most commonly used ASTM A182 UNS S32205 fastener nuts are regular hex nuts. At the same time, duplex stainless steel fasteners are strong and corrosion resistanut, combining the healthy properties of ferrite and austenite. The material also has a 90ksi minimum tensile strength and a 65ksi minimum yield strength. 2205 duplex stainless steel bolts have an elongation of 25% and a hardness of 217HBW.

2205 dual-phase steel fasteners have some excellenut mechanical properties, which may be due to the balanced austenitic and ferritic microstructures in the alloy.

Duplex 2205 is a chromium molybdenum blend which combines properties of both ferritic and austenitic steels.

Super Duplex 2507 has more than twice the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed condition.

UNS S32205 nuts (also known as S31803) are manufactured from high-grade duplex 2205 stainless steel. Since this material is composed of at least 22% chromium, 6% nickel and 3% molybdenum it can withstand several unique types of environmental inflexibilities that other metals cannot such as corrosion, cracking, erosion, pitting and more. Super duplex stainless steel 2205 nuts also provide twice the mechanical strength compared to standard stainless steel.

The equivalent proportions of their existence make it possible for the alloy to express qualities reminiscent of each steel type. Take austenitic steels, where the most basic grade, like 790 steel duplex pipe, has substantial corrosion resistance properties.

A butt weld pipe fitting is designed to be welded on site at its end(s) to connect pipe(s) together and allow change in direction or pipe diameter, or branching or ending.

This fitting then becomes part of a system for transporting fluids (oil, gas, steam, chemicals, …) in a safe and efficient manner, over short or long distances.

The combination of high strength, corrosion resistance and moderate weldability has many benefits but also bring disadvantages and limitations. High strength is a disadvantage when forming and machining. The higher strength also means that the metal is less ductile than austenitic grades. This means that these steels are not good when the goods being produce require any degree of complex forming. It is also worth bering in mind that evemn if the item can be formed in duplex steel greater forces are required. The metallurgy of duplex stainless steels is much more complex than for austenitic or ferritic steels whith the result that they are more complex and therefore expensive to produce. Howver the lower quantity of nickel in them as compared to austenitic grades does help to keep the cost down and reduce price volatility.

Duplex-grade stainless steel alloys have ferritic/austenitic properties, giving these materials superior strength and excellent resistance to oxidation.

2205 duplex stainless steel is a cost effective solution for many applications where the 300 series stainless steels are susceptible to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Stress corrosion cracking occurs when stainless steels are subjected to tensile stress, while in contact with solutions containing chlorides. Increasing temperatures also increase the susceptibility of stainless steels to stress corrosion cracking.

Since the material is also resistant to acids and chlorine compounds, it could see its application in marine environments, especially in saltwater containing chlorine compounds. The ferritic portion of the duplex structure of Super Duplex 2507 round bar alloy makes it resistant to stress corrosion cracking in warm chloride-containing environments.

Duplex 2205 was tested under reverse bending stress at room temperature compared to SS316. The results show that Duplex 2205 has approximately twice the fatigue limit/yield strength.

2205 duplex grade without requiring higher levels of nickel or molybdenum. This means that it is a low-cost option than most austenitic stainless steel having the same requirements.

Due to the alloy’s very high mechanical strength, dual-phase fastener manufacturers can reduce the weight of their designs by thinning the cross-section of the final product, proving a cost-saving alternative to other grades of stainless steel.

Some steels also contain the alloy elements such as Mo, Cu, Nb, Ti and N, etc. Compared with ferritic stainless, duplex stainless steel has higher plasticity, ductility and better intergranular corrosion resistance and weldability.

The duplex microstructure gives this grade high strength UNS S32750 a low coefficient of thermal expansion and higher heat conductivity than austenitic steels and is suitable for working temperatures up to 300¡ãC.
