The most basic difference between grade 304 and grade 316 stainless steels is that 316 tends to have more nickel and a bit of molybdenum in the mix. The high alloying of the material is giving 904L chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance but still, the material is susceptible.

316 stainless steel is more resistant to corrosion than 304 stainless steel, especially chlorides. This makes it a common choice for applications where marine equipment and other materials are exposed to extremely high concentrations of chlorides or other oxidizing agents. However, 304 stainless steel still has excellent corrosion resistance, so this is usually only a factor in marine environments and other high corrosion locations.

Type 316 steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel that contains between two and 3% molybdenum.

904L stainless steel washers are unstabilized austenitic stainless steel washers made from an alloy containing chromium, nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen with limited carbon content.
