Grade 304L, the low carbon version of 304, does not require post-weld annealing and so is extensively used in heavy gauge components (over about 6mm). Stainless Steel 316 is a molybdenum austenitic alloy that is highly resistant to corrosive and chloride environments. Typically, this grade of stainless steel is used in exhaust manifolds, heat exchangers, jet engines and many other applications.

This grade has surpassed its original intent and overlapped into many industries proving useful owing to its high level of molybdenum amount other elements, which allows 31254 to be used successfully in various applications such as Flue gas desulfurization and Chemical environments.

For 304 stainless steel tube heat resistance, it has good oxidation resistance in intermittent use at 8700C and continuous use at 9250C. Continuous use of 304 in the 425-8600C range is not recommended if subsequent water corrosion resistance is important. Grade 304L is more resistant to carbide precipitation and can be heated to the above temperature range.

However, the closer grade 304 stainless steel reaches its melting point, the more tensile strength it loses.
