A butt weld pipe fitting is designed to be welded on site at its end(s) to connect pipe(s) together and allow change in direction or pipe diameter, or branching or ending.

Through additions of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen localized corrosion such as pitting and crevice attack are improved. Alloy 2507 has excellent localized pitting resistance.

Duplex 2205 stainless steels are called “duplex” because they have a two-phase microstructure consisting of ferritic and austenitic stainless steel grains. When duplex stainless steel melts, it solidifies from the liquid phase to a fully ferritic structure. As the material cools to room temperature, about half of the ferrite grains transform into austenite grains (“islands”). The result is a microstructure of approximately 50% austenite and 50% ferrite.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel (ferritic and austenitic) is widely used in applications requiring good corrosion resistance and strength. Grade S31803 stainless steel was modified several times to form UNS S32205, which was recognized in 1996.

Alloy 2205 duplex stainless steel plate has better pitting and crevice corrosion resistance than 316L or 317L austenitic stainless steel in almost all corrosive media.

Heated from 1050¡ãC to 1150¡ãC and water quenched, this treatment of duplex steel UNS S31803 nuts ensures that all carbides are dissolved.

Another reason for the good mechanical properties of duplex stainless steel fasteners can be attributed to the mixed but balanced austenitic and ferritic microstructure present in the alloy.

ASTM A182 F51 equates to UNS S31803. This was the original caption for a 22% Cr duplex stainless steel.

The A182 F51 material has carbon, 2% manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, 1% silicon, chromium, 4.5% nickel, 2.5% molybdenum and nitrogen it.

They also have excellent resistance to corrosion cracking and localized corrosion such as pitting, intergranular and crevice. Unlike other standard austenitic steels, UNS S31803 steel has excellent magnetic properties.

UNS S32760 (F55, 1.4501) is a high alloy super duplex stainless steel mainly used in a variety of strongly corrosive environments. S32760 has strong strength and corrosion resistance and is mainly used in chemical processing, petrochemical and subsea equipment.

The granular structure of duplex is a ferrite-austenite hybrid with a superior strength to weight ratio in comparison to 304 or 316. It balances the weldability of an austenitic with a pure ferritic and retains decent mechanical toughness in applications with exposure to colder ambient temperatures.

This category of material includes grades 2205, F51, F53, and F60. Duplex stainless has increased in popularity over the years due to its excellent chemical and mechanical properties versus their basic stainless counterparts, given especially that the cost differences are minimal now as the availability has increased.

2205 duplex stainless steel is a cost effective solution for many applications where the 300 series stainless steels are susceptible to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Stress corrosion cracking occurs when stainless steels are subjected to tensile stress, while in contact with solutions containing chlorides. Increasing temperatures also increase the susceptibility of stainless steels to stress corrosion cracking.
