304 covers the standard for wrought austenitic stainless steel pipe fittings for pressure piping applications. The material of pipe fittings shall include forgings, bars, plates or seamless or welded pipes. Forging or forming operations shall be performed by hammering, pressing, piercing, extruding, upsetting, rolling, bending, fusion welding, machining, or a combination of two or more of these operations. Alloy 310 can be used for mild oxidation, nitridation, cementation and thermal cycling applications, but the maximum service temperature must be reduced. Alloy 310 can also be used in low temperature applications with low permeability and toughness down to -450oF (-268oC). When heated between 1202 ¨C 1742oF (650 ¨C 950oC), the alloy exhibits sigma phase precipitation. Solution annealing at 2012 ¨C 2102oF (1100 ¨C 1150oC) will restore some degree of toughness.

These grades of austenitic stainless steels are the most versatile and widely used stainless steels.Type 304 and 304L stainless steel pipe can perform well in high temperature and harsh environments.

The austenitic stainless steel 6Mo was developed on the basis of alloy 904l/1.4539. However, the molybdenum content at 6Mo is increased to 6.5%. 6Mo has excellent general corrosion resistance and improved pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. Resistance to stress corrosion cracking is also improved. It is often referred to as super austenitic stainless steel.

304 has good oxidation resistance in intermittent duty up to 870¡ãC and continuous duty up to 925¡ãC. However, continuous use at 425-860¡ãC is not recommended. In this case, 304L is recommended because of its resistance to carbide precipitation.

The increased nickel content and the inclusion of molybdenum makes grade 316 stainless steel a bit costlier than grade 304 per ounce of material. But where grade 316 stainless proves superior is its increased corrosion resistance¡ªparticularly against chlorides and chlorinated solutions. This makes grade 316 stainless particularly desirable for applications where exposure to salt or other powerful corrosives is an issue.

Type 304 stainless steel is a T 300 Series Stainless Steel austenitic. It has a minimum of 18% chromium and 8% nickel, combined with a maximum of 0.08% carbon. It is defined as a Chromium-Nickel austenitic alloy.304 stainless steel is used for a variety of household and industrial applications such as food handling and processing equipment, screws,[3] machinery parts, utensils, and exhaust manifolds. 304 stainless steel is also used in the architectural field for exterior accents such as water and fire features. It is also a common coil material for vaporizers.

The flange is second most used joining method after selding. Flanges are used when joints need dismantling. It provides flexibility for maintenance. Flange connects the pipe with various equipment and valves. Breakup flanges are added in the pipeline system if regular maintenance in required during plant operation.
A flanged joint is composed of three separate and independent although interrdlated components; the flanges, the gaskets, and the bolting; which are assembled by yet another influence, the fitter. Special controls are required in the selection and application of all there elements to attain a joint, which has acceptable leak tightness.
A flange is a protruded ridge, lip or rim, either external or internal, that serves to increase strength (as the flange of an iron beam such as an I-beam or a T-beam); for easy attachment/transfer of contact force with another object (as the flange on the end of a pipe, steam cylinder, etc., or on the lens mount of a camera); or for stabilizing and guiding the movements of a machine or its parts (as the inside flange of a rail car or tram wheel, which keep the wheels from running off the rails). The term “flange” is also used for a kind of tool used to form flanges.
