AL6XN is a superaustenitic stainless steel with outstanding resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. AL6XN is a 6 moly alloy that was developed for and is used in highly aggressive environments. Annealing between 1050 and 1080¡ãC can be done after forging, followed by rapid quenching, especially to restore corrosion resistance, but there is no heat treatment to harden 316L.

For 304L stainless steel pipe, the range of carbon content in the steel affects the corrosion resistance of the tank. During the welding of steel, a phenomenon called “chromium carbide precipitation” occurs at temperatures between 800 and 1500¡ãF (425 and 815¡ãC). Chromium combines with carbon in the heat affected zone and precipitates as chromium carbide at grain boundaries. As a result, it significantly reduces the corrosion resistance of the steel in this area. Due to the lower carbon content of 304L steel, the risk of chromium carbide precipitation is greatly reduced.

Alloy 309 (UNS S30900) is an austenitic stainless steel developed for high temperature corrosion resistant applications. The alloy resists oxidation up to 1900¡ãF (1038¡ãC) under non-cycling conditions. Frequent thermal cycling reduces oxidation resistance to approximately 1850¡ãF (1010¡ãC).
