Duplex stainless steel 2205 alloy is a compound stainless steel composed of 22% chromium, 2.5% molybdenum and 4.5% nickel nitrogen alloy.
It has high strength, good impact toughness and good overall and local stress corrosion resistance.

Duplex describes a family of stainless steels that are neither fully austenitic, like 304 stainless, nor purely ferritic, like 430 stainless. The structure of 2205 duplex stainless steel consists of austenite pools surrounded by a continuous ferrite phase.

The ductility and corrosion resistance of duplex steel fasteners are reminiscent of their austenitic microstructure. On the other hand, the toughness and hardness of these fasteners are inherited from the ferritic region.

Duplex 2205 flanges combine the qualities of stress corrosion cracking resistance and high strength derived from being a ferritic alloy along with its austenitic fabrication capabilities.

UNS31803 has been supplemented by S32205 (F60) which dual conforms to S31803 but has a higher minimum N, MO, NI and Cr which guarantees a better corrosion resistance.

The flanges could also be manufactured as screwed, threaded or forged types. The forged flanges are made from a single piece of raw material. These are also called the cast flanges.

The 2205 gasket is known as a duplex stainless steel gasket because it has a combination of ferrite and austenite and can be made into fasteners due to its high corrosion resistance. It has higher corrosion resistance than 316 stainless steel and is also highly resistant to stress corrosion and chloride cracking. 2205 has been determined to be cost effective because it is only 5% nickel and is significantly less expensive than Hastelloy C276 fasteners.

Duplex steels are also magnetic, a property that can be used to easily distinguish them from ordinary austenitic stainless grades.

The steel has excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, high thermal conductivity and a low coefficient of thermal expansion. The high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen levels provide excellent resistance to pitting, crevice, and general corrosion.
