It has high nickel (24%), molybdenum (6.3%), nitrogen and chromium contents that give it excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, chloride pitting, and exceptional general corrosion resistance. AL6XN is primarily used for its improved pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chlorides. It is a formable and weldable stainless steel.

Neither the 316 nor the 316L are the cheapest options. The 304 and 304L are similar but less expensive. Neither are as durable as 317 and 317L, they have higher molybdenum content and better overall corrosion resistance.

304 is chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel. Better corrosion resistance than Type 302. High ductility, excellent drawing, forming and spinning properties. Low carbon content means less precipitation of carbides in the heat affected zone during welding and less susceptibility to intergranular corrosion.
