316L S31603 1.4401 stub end slip on flange

While 300 series stainless steels are very popular, they are not universally suitable for all process piping applications. For example, even though they are corrosion resistant, 300 series formulations do not perform well in the presence of chlorides. In these cases, steels with much higher alloy contents such as molybdenum, chromium and nickel are preferred.

In addition to excellent corrosion resistance and strength properties, Type 316 and 316L alloys have the typical machinability and formability of austenitic stainless steels.

Types 316 and 316L are more resistant to atmospheric and other mild types of corrosion than 18-8 stainless steel. Generally, media that do not corrode 18-8 stainless steel will not corrode these molybdenum-containing grades. A known exception is highly oxidizing acids, such as molybdenum-containing stainless steels, which are less resistant to nitric acid.
