The inclusion of chromium imparts good corrosion resistance to austenitic grade 304. However, increasing the chromium content to about 25%, as in the case of 2205 duplex stainless steel pipe makes the alloy resilient across several media.

Though it is important to keep in mind that pitting corrosion can be a concern in chloride solutions when oxidizing media is present. In these conditions, the passive (protective) layer of the Duplex 2205 material may be compromised in localized pitting may occur.

The combination of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen gives 2205 good resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. This resistance is extremely important for services such as marine environments, brackish water, bleaching operations, closed loop water systems and some food processing applications.

Duplex describes a family of stainless steels that are neither fully austenitic, like 304 stainless, nor purely ferritic, like 430 stainless. The structure of 2205 duplex stainless steel consists of austenite pools surrounded by a continuous ferrite phase.

Compared to 317L stainless steel, duplex steel has excellent resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. Duplex stainless steel, alloy 2205 was designed as comprising 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel nitrogen. Alloy 2205 combines the desirable aspect of properties of both austenitic and ferritic grades.

Duplex 2205 fasteners are made from standard duplex materials. The material consists of carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, 21% chromium, 2.5% molybdenum, 4.5% nickel and nitrogen.

The pressure ratings of the material are designated by classes 150Lbs through 2500LBs. There are different types of the duplex f51 flanges such as the raised face, ring type joint and flat face flanges.

ASTM A479 UNS S31803 Duplex Steel Bolts are made of duplex stainless steel. Due to the high mechanical properties, cost effectiveness and corrosion resistance of ASME SA 479 UNS S32205 Duplex 2205 Bolts and other products in this grade, Duplex Steel is used as a replacement for most other steel types.

S31803 has been supplemented by S32205 (F60) which dual conforms to S31803 but has a higher minimum N, MO, NI and Cr which guarantees a better corrosion resistance.

Compared with ferritic stainless steel and austenitic stainless steel, duplex stainless steel pipe has good welding performance. It is neither like the welding heat affected zone of ferritic stainless steel, because of the grain coarsening, the plastic toughness is greatly reduced, nor like austenitic stainless steel, it is more sensitive to welding hot cracks.

The combination of high strength, corrosion resistance and moderate weldability has many benefits but also bring disadvantages and limitations. High strength is a disadvantage when forming and machining. The higher strength also means that the metal is less ductile than austenitic grades. This means that these steels are not good when the goods being produce require any degree of complex forming. It is also worth bering in mind that evemn if the item can be formed in duplex steel greater forces are required. The metallurgy of duplex stainless steels is much more complex than for austenitic or ferritic steels whith the result that they are more complex and therefore expensive to produce. Howver the lower quantity of nickel in them as compared to austenitic grades does help to keep the cost down and reduce price volatility.

Alloy 2205 Pipe has a melting point of 1350 degrees C. These pipes have a wall thickness between 0.3mm to 50mm.

S32760 also has high strength and extended service life. It is 10% lighter than grade 316 steel, ideal for sub-zero use, and more cost-effective than nickel alloys. Stainless steel grade F55 can be easily machined and welded.
