AL6XN is a superaustenitic stainless steel with outstanding resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. AL6XN is a 6 moly alloy that was developed for and is used in highly aggressive environments. It has high nickel (24%), molybdenum (6.3%), nitrogen and chromium contents that give it excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, chloride pitting, and exceptional general corrosion resistance. AL6XN is primarily used for its improved pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chlorides. It is a formable and weldable stainless steel.

UNS N08367 also commonly referred to as alloy AL6XN is a low carbon, high purity, nitrogen-bearing “super-austenitic” nickel-molybdenum alloy with excellent resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion.

Stainless steel 316Ti hex head bolts are typically used in areas that can withstand higher temperatures than Type 304, and their low carbon makes them resistant to carbon precipitation. A flange is a ring of steel (forged, cut from plate, or rolled) designed to connect sections of pipe, or to join pipe to a pressure vessel, valve, pump or other integral flanged assembly. Flanges are joined to each other by bolts, and to the piping system by welding or threading (or loose when stub ends are used). Stainless steel flange simplified as SS flange, it refers to the flanges that made of stainless steel. Common material standards and Grades are ASTM A182 Grade F304/L and F316/L, with pressure ratings from Class 150, 300, 600 etc and to 2500. The lower carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone near the weld, which can lead to intergranular corrosion (welding corrosion) of stainless steel in some environments.

SAE 304 stainless steel is the most common stainless steel. The steel contains both chromium (between 18% and 20%) and nickel (between 8% and 10.5%)[1] metals as the main non-iron constituents. It is an austenitic stainless steel. It is less electrically and thermally conductive than carbon steel. It is magnetic, but less magnetic than steel. It has a higher corrosion resistance than regular steel and is widely used because of the ease in which it is formed into various shapes.[1]

The standards vary from B16.5, B16.47 and in different series A and B. There are different types based on the production such as the ASME SA182 grade 316TI Weld neck flange. The weld neck flanges are useful because of the neck welded onto the flanges, they allow for better grip. The different standards such as DIN 1.4571 Flange determine the size, diameter and wall thickness of the flanges.

One exception, however, are strongly oxidizing acids such as nitric acid. Alloys that contain molybdenum generally do not perform as well in these environments.?

304 has good oxidation resistance in intermittent duty up to 870¡ãC and continuous duty up to 925¡ãC. However, continuous use at 425-860¡ãC is not recommended. In this case, 304L is recommended because of its resistance to carbide precipitation.

254 SMO is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel developed for use in aggressive chloride-bearing media or seawater applications. The 254 SMO is characterised by its high chromium content, this is further complemented by its molybdenum and nitrogen content which gives 254 SMO excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Since these oil storage tanks are located in the Arabian Gulf (saline conditions) the use of this material was an optimal solution for the environment. In addition to this, the coating of the flanges was also specially selected due to its protective qualities.
