SMO 254 Hexagonal Pipes is subject to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and to stress corrosion cracking above about 60 Degree C.

SAE 304 stainless steel is the most common stainless steel. The steel contains both chromium (between 18% and 20%) and nickel (between 8% and 10.5%)[1] metals as the main non-iron constituents. It is an austenitic stainless steel. It is less electrically and thermally conductive than carbon steel. It is magnetic, but less magnetic than steel. AL6XN alloy (UNS N08367) is a low carbon, high purity, nitrogen-bearing “super-austenitic” stainless alloy.

The lower carbon content of the stainless steel 304 thread bar reduces chromium carbide precipitation from welding and its susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. Stainless steel 304 studs are not particularly thermally or electrically conductive and are non-magnetic. Grade 304 stainless steel is generally considered the most common austenitic stainless steel.

Due to greater chromium content and average nickel, it becomes sulfidation resistant. It is used at the cementing, thermal cycling, oxidizing, and nitriding applications.
