The combination of high strength, corrosion resistance and moderate weldability has many benefits but also bring disadvantages and limitations. High strength is a disadvantage when forming and machining. The higher strength also means that the metal is less ductile than austenitic grades. This means that these steels are not good when the goods being produce require any degree of complex forming. It is also worth bering in mind that evemn if the item can be formed in duplex steel greater forces are required. The metallurgy of duplex stainless steels is much more complex than for austenitic or ferritic steels whith the result that they are more complex and therefore expensive to produce. Howver the lower quantity of nickel in them as compared to austenitic grades does help to keep the cost down and reduce price volatility.

Duplex stainless steels have a microstructure which is 50% ferritic and 50% austenitic. This composition gives them a better strength than either ferritic or austenitic steels. Further details about this topic are given below (see ASTM A790 pipes).

Due to the ferritic portion of the duplex structure of the alloy it is very resistant to stress corrosion cracking in warm chloride containing environments.

At temperatures above 300¡ãC, the brittle trace components of 2205 precipitate, and at temperatures below -50¡ãC, the trace components undergo a ductile-brittle transition; therefore, this grade of stainless steel is not suitable for use at these temperatures.

The yield strength of 2205 is about twice that of austenitic stainless steel. This allows designers to reduce weight and make the alloy more cost-competitive compared to 316L or 317L.

Duplex stainless steel pipes and fittings are generally less expensive because of the lower proportions of alloying elements used in the manufacture of duplex stainless steels. Compared to austenitic stainless steels, duplex stainless steels have higher yield strengths, so users can buy duplex pipes and duplex pipe fittings in relatively lower thicknesses.

Duplex 2507 is usually used in Desalination Equipment, Chemical process pressure vessels, piping and heat exchangers and Marine Applications.

The composition of UNS S32750 super duplex steel strip contains chromium, nickel and molybdenum.

Super Duplex 2507 cannot be strengthened by heat treating. Annealing is performed at 1920¡ãF – 2060¡ãF (1049¡ãC – 1127¡ãC), followed by rapid cooling.

The yield strength of duplex stainless steel is twice that of austenitic stainless steel. This feature allows designers to reduce weight when designing products, making this alloy more cost-effective than 316, 317L.

Seamless pipe is not as strong as Duplex SS 2205 welded pipe, but is very dimensionally accurate. Dimensional accuracy is useful in highly sensitive applications where measurement and calculation accuracy is required.

Compared to 317L stainless steel, duplex steel has excellent resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. The alloy has excellent corrosion resistance to seawater and most concentrations of sulfuric acid. In addition, it is resistant to sulfide stress corrosion cracking (sour gas environments)

The content of chromium, molybdenum, nickel and nitrogen in the 2205 duplex bolt alloy enhances its mechanical properties. E.g. ¨C UNS S31803 Fastener alloys contain trace amounts of carbon.

S31803 has been supplemented by S32205 which has a higher minimum N, CR and Mo.
