This is especially unique compared to most ferrous materials, which are generally stronger but very brittle at extreme low temperatures.

316 stainless steel is more resistant to corrosion than 304 stainless steel, especially chlorides. This makes it a common choice for applications where marine equipment and other materials are exposed to extremely high concentrations of chlorides or other oxidizing agents. However, 304 stainless steel still has excellent corrosion resistance, so this is usually only a factor in marine environments and other high corrosion locations.
