Type 316 stainless steel is particularly effective in sour environments. This grade of steel is effective against corrosion caused by sulfuric, hydrochloric, acetic, formic and tartaric acids, as well as acidic sulfates and basic chlorides.

Alloy 347 (UNS S34700) is columbium stabilized austenitic stainless steel plate with good general corrosion resistance and somewhat better resistance in strong oxidizing conditions than 321 (UNS S32100).

S31803 is the Unified Numbering System (UNS) designation for the original duplex stainless steel. The UNS system was created by multiple trade groups in the 1970s to reduce confusion when the same alloy was called different things, and vice versa. Each metal is represented by a letter followed by five numbers, where the letter represents the metal series, i.e. S for stainless steel.

For paper mill applications requiring lower alloy grades that do not have sufficient corrosion resistance. Based on a 22% chromium content, they have a combined austenitic:ferritic microstructure that provides greater strength, corrosion resistance and cost-effectiveness.

The UNS S31803 (ASTM F51) specification has been largely superseded by UNS S32205 (1.4462, ASTM F60). This reflects their desire to maximize the alloy’s corrosion properties, thanks to the development of the AOD steelmaking process, which allows for tighter control of composition. In addition, it allows to influence the nitrogen addition level rather than just being present as a background element. Therefore, the highest performing duplex grades seek to maximize the content of chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo) and nitrogen (N).

316L has a lower proportion of carbon in its composition.

304 Stainless Steel Pipe is however susceptible to corrosion from chloride solutions, notably saline environments with high amounts of sodium chloride (salt). ASTM A358 TP304 is a great choice for general stainless steel applications such as kitchen and food processing applications, liquid storage and tanks, heat exchangers, building facades, pressure vessels and other applications involving fresh water environments.

304/304L cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Cold working increases tensile strength and hardness. Annealing range is between 1850¡ã and 2050¡ãF. Cool quickly. Water should be used for heavier parts; air for lighter parts. The stress relief range is between 400¡ã and 750¡ãF.

The lower carbon content of 304L alloy helps to minimize/eliminate carbide precipitation during welding. This allows 304L stainless steel to be used “as welded”, even in severely corrosive environments. If you use standard 304 stainless steel in the same way, it will degrade faster at welded joints.

There is more carbon in 316 stainless steel than 316L. This is easy to remember because the L stands for “low”. But even with the lower carbon content, 316L is very similar to 316 in almost every way.
