It is an austenitic stainless steel alloy with high nickel (24%), chromium (22%), molybdenum (6%), and nitrogen (0.18%) content and is commonly known as superaustenitic stainless steel (alloys such as 254 SMO (UNS?S31254) and 904L (UNS?N08904) also fall under the superaustenitic designation) while 2205 (UNS S32305/ S31803) and 2507 (UNS S32750) are duplex and super duplex stainless steel, respectively.

UNS N08367 also commonaly called as AL6XN alloy. AL-6XN alloy (UNS N08367) is a low carbon, nitrogen-bearing and high purity “super-austenitic” stainless alloy. The corrosion resistance and high strength of the Al6XN WN Flange make it a better choice than the conventional duplex stainless steels such as 904L or 254 SMO where excellent weldability, formability, corrosion resistance and strength are essential.

The increased nickel content and the inclusion of molybdenum makes grade 316 stainless steel a bit costlier than grade 304 per ounce of material. But where grade 316 stainless proves superior is its increased corrosion resistance¡ªparticularly against chlorides and chlorinated solutions. When the chromium content of the alloy is below a minimum of 12%, for example in the aerospace industry, the term “corrosion resistant steel” is used. Stainless steel comes in different grades and surface finishes, depending on where it is used.

AL-6XN (UNS N08367) is a 6% molybdenum, low carbon, nitrogen-bearing super-austenitic stainless alloy. The alloy was originally designed for seawater applications. AL-6XN? has also been successfully used in a broad range of very corrosive environments including the rapidly developing biopharm markets.

304L is preferred. And it lacks a minimum carbon content, which is not ideal for high temperature applications where optimum strength is required, so 304H is the first choice. Thus, 304 is generally limited to rods or sheets that are to be machined into components that do not require welding, or sheets formed in articles, such as kitchen sinks or cookware, which are also not welded.

The flange is second most used joining method after selding. Flanges are used when joints need dismantling. It provides flexibility for maintenance. Flange connects the pipe with various equipment and valves. Breakup flanges are added in the pipeline system if regular maintenance in required during plant operation.
A flanged joint is composed of three separate and independent although interrdlated components; the flanges, the gaskets, and the bolting; which are assembled by yet another influence, the fitter. Special controls are required in the selection and application of all there elements to attain a joint, which has acceptable leak tightness.
