S31803 is the Unified Numbering System (UNS) designation for the original duplex stainless steel. The UNS system was created by multiple trade groups in the 1970s to reduce confusion when the same alloy was called different things, and vice versa. Each metal is represented by a letter followed by five numbers, where the letter represents the metal series, i.e. S for stainless steel.

For paper mill applications requiring lower alloy grades that do not have sufficient corrosion resistance. Based on a 22% chromium content, they have a combined austenitic:ferritic microstructure that provides greater strength, corrosion resistance and cost-effectiveness.

The UNS S31803 (ASTM F51) specification has been largely superseded by UNS S32205 (1.4462, ASTM F60). This reflects their desire to maximize the alloy’s corrosion properties, thanks to the development of the AOD steelmaking process, which allows for tighter control of composition. In addition, it allows to influence the nitrogen addition level rather than just being present as a background element. Therefore, the highest performing duplex grades seek to maximize the content of chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo) and nitrogen (N).

SAE 304 stainless steel is the most common stainless steel. The steel contains both chromium (between 18% and 20%) and nickel (between 8% and 10.5%)[1] metals as the main non-iron constituents. It is an austenitic stainless steel. It is less electrically and thermally conductive than carbon steel. It is magnetic, but less magnetic than steel. It has a higher corrosion resistance than regular steel and is widely used because of the ease in which it is formed into various shapes.[1]

Although chemically similar to 316 grade austenitic stainless steel, 317 alloy has a slightly higher molybdenum content in its alloy. Above 3% molybdenum, the properties of stainless steel 317 sheet and plate are enhanced, making it particularly suitable for applications that cannot be met with 316 alloy.

ASTM A694 carbon steel is the most common grade of carbon steel used for round bar development. The increased carbon content of the alloy reduces ductility by increasing tensile strength. However, the carbon content provides the round bar with the ability to harden during tempering. This is why round steel developed with the existence of alloy carbon steel grades.

Knowing the finish of these steels can be helpful if your pipes are visible and appearance is on the list of considerations. Stainless steel is usually glossy and can retain that gloss if exposed to weather and other factors. Carbon steel, on the other hand, is darker in color and usually has a matte finish when painted. Unfortunately, it can also rust and look bad if left exposed. Galvanizing is also an option.

Alloy C276 Forged Flange Hastelloy C276 Flanges are made up of the nickel chromium molybdenum alloy that is called hastelloy. The composition includes 50.99% nickel, 14.5% chromium, 15% molybdenum and carbon, manganese, silicon, sulfur, cobalt, iron and phosphorus in it. The Hastelloy C276 Flanges have high melting point of 1370 degrees Celsius. This high melting point allows for higher operating temperatures of the flanges. The material also has 790MPa minimum tensile strength and 355MPa minimum yield strength.

Chrome molybdenum flanges provide higher levels of chromium and molybdenum. The added chromium helps improve the hardenability and corrosion resistance of the steel, while the added molybdenum helps to enhance its toughness and corrosion resistance.

Inconel Alloy 718 flanges are oxidation resistant over their service temperature range. Our Inconel 718 flanges should be machined as rigid and overloaded as possible.

There is more carbon in 316 stainless steel than 316L. This is easy to remember because the L stands for “low”. But even with the lower carbon content, 316L is very similar to 316 in almost every way. Costs are very similar, and both are durable, corrosion-resistant, and a good choice for high-stress situations.
