Steel flanges provide an easy access for cleaning, inspection or modification. They usually come in round shapes but they can also come in square and rectangular forms. The flanges are joined to each other by bolting and joined to the piping system by welding or threading and are designed to the specific pressure ratings; 150lb, 300lb, 400lb, 600lb, 900lb, 1500lb and 2500lb.

Normalizing removes impurities from steel and increases its strength and hardness. This is achieved by changing the size of the grains to make them more uniform throughout the steel sheet. The steel is first heated to a specific temperature and then cooled by air.

Grade 309 bolts do not respond to heat treatment, and cold working results in an increase in hardness and strength. Type 309 bolts cannot be hardened by heat treatment, where annealing is performed at 1900¡ãF – 2050¡ãF (1038¡ãC – 1121¡ãC) followed by water quenching or rapid air cooling. Heating this AISI 309 bolt between 1050¡ãC and 1150¡ãC and water quenching ensures that all carbides are dissolved.

Alloy 317L (UNS S31703) is a molybdenum-containing austenitic stainless steel with significantly improved chemical resistance compared to conventional chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels such as alloy 304. Additionally, Alloy 317L has higher creep, stress-fracture and tensile strength at elevated temperatures than conventional stainless steels. It is a low carbon or “L” grade that provides resistance to sensitization during welding and other thermal processes.

Nickel Alloy Inconel 625 | UNS# N06250 is a nickel-based superalloy with high strength properties, high temperature resistance, and significant oxidation and corrosion protection.

This alloy is especially useful in the -50¡ãF/+600¡ãF temperature range. For applications outside this temperature range, this alloy can also be considered, but there are some restrictions, especially when used in welded structures.

Stainless steel is on average 2.5 times stronger than copper and performs far much better on the strain and stress tests. The relatively weaker structure for copper makes its piping vulnerable to external forces that may cause cracks and leaks.
