Originally developed to combat seawater corrosion, AL6XN has expanded its role as a good mid-range corrosion resistant alloy. AL6XN screw is a low carbon, high purity, nitrogen containing “super austenitic” stainless steel alloy. AL 6XN threaded rods are super austenitic AL 6XN threaded rods are super austenitic, made from an alloy containing limited carbon content of chromium, nickel and molybdenum. AL 6XN threaded rod is resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking.

Austenitic stainless steels are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in halide environments. Conditions that produce SCC are: (1) the presence of halide ions (usually chloride ions), (2) residual tensile stress, and (3) temperatures in excess of about 120¡ãF (49¡ãC).

The combination of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen give Duplex 2205 flanges good protection from chloride pitting and crevice corrosion, which makes them useful for marine environments, brackish water, bleaching operations, closed loop water systems and some food processing applications.

904L cannot be hardened by heat treatment. You can weld 904L stainless using any standard method, but it is susceptible to hot cracking. It can be machined but does not machine well.
