Monel was created by the International Nickel Company and patented in 1906. The patent has expired and it is available from a variety of sources. Alloy 400 is versatile and is used to resist both acids and alkalis. Seawater applications are common. A variant is Alloy 405 (UNS N04405). It contains slightly more sulfur, which improves machinability.

 

Monel 400 is a Nickel-Copper high-performance alloy that is resistant to the harsh corrosion and temperatures of seawater, steam at high temperatures, and other caustic solutions. It is particularly resistant to hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids when they are de-aerated. This material is characterized by good corrosion resistance and has a potential for good weldability. It is slightly magnetic at room temperature but this alloy can be used in a variety of applications

 

Heavy hex bolts are generally specified for high temperature or high pressure applications, particularly where bolt heads will bear against flanges. Standard diameters are 1/2″ and larger. The main difference between a heavy hex bolt and a regular (or finished) hex bolt is the distance across opposite flats of the hex. Heavy hex bolts are 1/8 of an inch larger than a finished hex bolt of the same diameter. The formula for determining hex size is one-and-a-half times the diameter plus 1/8″.

Approximately 65% nickel, 32% copper.

 

Monel 400 is widely used in chemical, electrical and saltwater marine applications as well as offshore engineering, salt production, and hydrocarbon processing. This material is available in ASTM B164 Class A.

 

Hot working on Monel 400 machine screws needs to be done by choosing proper temperatures. Typical temperatures for hot working range between 648-1176°C (1200-2150°F). These Monel 400 hex cap screws, Monel 400 socket head cap screws,Monel 400 Forgings, Monel 400 Rings, Monel 400 Springs, Monel 400 hex nuts, Monel 400 lock nuts could also be easily welded, soldered, and brazed. The most commonly used Monel 400 studs and nuts in process containing hydrofluoric acid is Monel 400 nuts and bolts are used for some applications.

 

In most water applications when conditions turn and materials need to hold up in tougher, more severe and extremely corrosive environments, Monel 400 fasteners need to be called on. High tensile strength make Monel 400 fasteners perfect for marine use.

 

The most common type of Monel 400 fastener, a Monel 400 hex head bolt is designed to be tightened with a standard spanner or ratchet and socket. Popularly used in all assemblies, a standard Monel 400 hex bolt is a staple across the world. Manufactured to ISO 4014 or DIN 931, and therefore includes an unthreaded section of the shaft. A hex drive permits a greater torque load to be applied to the joint over most other drive types.
