ASTM B574Download

ASTM B574/B574M is the standard specification by ASTM International covering low-carbon nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloys in the form of hot-finished and cold-finished rod and bar. The most widely used grades are UNS N10276 (Hastelloy C276) and UNS N06022 (Hastelloy C22). The companion specification ASME SB-574 adopts identical requirements.

Zhengzhou Huitong (HT Pipe) supplies ASTM B574 / SB-574 compliant nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy rods and bars with full Mill Test Certificates (MTC) per EN 10204 3.1

Note: Hardness testing per ASTM E10 (Brinell) or ASTM E18 (Rockwell). Cold-worked bar may exhibit higher strength due to cold work.

5. Heat Treatment Requirements

Grade Condition Heat Treatment Cooling
UNS N10276 (Hastelloy C276) Solution Annealed 1066–1121°C (1950–2050°F) Water quench
UNS N06022 (Hastelloy C22) Solution Annealed 1040–1120°C (1900–2050°F) Water quench

UNS N06455 (Hastelloy C4) Solution Annealed 1040–1120°C (1900–2050°F) Water quench
Important: All grades covered by ASTM B574 are low-carbon alloys (≤0.01–0.015% C) that require solution annealing followed by rapid water quenching. This is critical to dissolve any precipitated phases and ensure maximum corrosion resistance. Hastelloy C276 is one of the few alloys resistant to wet chlorine gas, hypochlorite, and chlorine dioxide solutions.

12. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is ASTM B574 nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy rod?

ASTM B574/B574M is the standard specification for low-carbon nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloys in the form of hot-finished and cold-finished rod and bar. It covers UNS N10276 (Hastelloy C276), UNS N06022 (Hastelloy C22), UNS N06059 (Hastelloy C59), UNS N06035 (Hastelloy G35), UNS N06455 (Hastelloy C4), and UNS N06686 (Alloy 686).

Q: What is Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276)?

Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276) is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy with tungsten addition. It is one of the most versatile corrosion-resistant alloys, with excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking in both oxidizing and reducing environments. It resists wet chlorine, hypochlorite, oxidizing acids, and ferric/chloride solutions.

Q: What are the mechanical properties of Hastelloy C276 rod per ASTM B574?

In the solution-annealed condition, UNS N10276 (Hastelloy C276) rod must meet: minimum tensile strength 690 MPa (100 ksi), minimum yield strength 283 MPa (41 ksi), and minimum elongation 40%. Hardness maximum is 210 HB.

Q: What is the difference between Hastelloy C276 and C22?

Hastelloy C276 (N10276) has 14.5–16.5% Cr and 15–17% Mo with 3–4.5% W. Hastelloy C22 (N06022) has higher chromium (20–22.5%) with lower molybdenum (12.5–14.5%) and lower tungsten (2.5–3.5%). C22 offers better resistance to oxidizing environments and superior weldability, while C276 provides better resistance to localized corrosion in reducing conditions.

Q: What is the difference between ASTM B574 and ASTM B575?

ASTM B574 covers nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy rod and bar. ASTM B575 covers the same alloy family in plate, sheet, and strip form. Both share the same UNS grades and similar chemical and mechanical requirements.

Q: Is ASTM B574 the same as ASME SB-574?

Technically identical in chemistry and mechanical properties. ASME SB-574 is ASTM B574 adopted into ASME BPVC Section II Part B. SB-574 additionally requires Certified Material Test Reports (CMTR) for ASME Code-stamped equipment. Most mills supply dual-certified B574/SB-574 material.
