MSS SP-79Download

1. Scope

This standard covers ratings, dimensions, tolerances, finish, marking and material requirements for socket-welding reducer inserts, available in pressure classes 3000 and 6000. Socket-welding reducer inserts are male-end reducing fittings inserted into ASME B16.11 socket-weld fittings or couplings to provide size reductions within a B16.11 Class 3000/6000 piping system. MSS SP-79 is the companion standard to ASME B16.11 — it defines the dimensional envelope for the reducer insert that allows a B16.11 equal-size socket fitting to become a reducing connection. Both concentric (CRE) and eccentric (ERE) configurations are covered.

Edition: MSS SP-79-2024 (supersedes MSS SP-79-2018) | Size Range: NPS 1/4–4 | Connection: Male plain end (small) / Socket bore (large) — both per ASME B16.11 | Pressure Classes: CL3000 and CL6000 | Materials: Carbon steel and alloy steel | Companion Standard: ASME B16.11 | Tables: Table 2 (US customary), Table 2M (metric)

2. Product Types

Product Type Configuration Socket End (Large) Plain End (Small) Application
Concentric Reducer Insert (CRE) Centreline aligned Per B16.11 CL3000/6000 Plain, NPS reduced Vertical lines, liquid service
Eccentric Reducer Insert (ERE) Offset centreline (bottom aligned) Per B16.11 CL3000/6000 Plain, NPS reduced Horizontal lines, gas/vapor, pump suction

3. Common Reducing Combinations (NPS Large × NPS Small)

Socket End (Large) Plain End (Small) Typical Class
3/4 × 1/2 1/2 × 1/4 CL3000
1 × 3/4 3/4 × 1/2 CL3000
1-1/4 × 1 1 × 3/4 CL3000
1-1/2 × 1-1/4 1-1/4 × 1 CL3000
2 × 1-1/2 1-1/2 × 1-1/4 CL3000
2 × 1 CL6000
3 × 2 2 × 1-1/2 CL6000
4 × 3 3 × 2 CL3000

Standard reducing combinations per MSS SP-79-2024 Table 2/2M. Larger reductions and non-standard combinations may be available — consult manufacturer. Each combination is available in Class 3000 and/or Class 6000 depending on the socket size.

4. Dimensional Requirements (Reference — per MSS SP-79-2024 Table 2)

NPS (Socket End) Socket Bore min (CL3000) mm Socket Bore min (CL6000) mm Socket Depth min (approx.) mm Overall Length (approx.) mm
1/4 13.72 13.72 9.5 per SP-79 Table 2
1/2 21.34 21.34 9.5 per SP-79 Table 2
3/4 26.67 26.67 12.7 per SP-79 Table 2
1 33.40 33.40 12.7 per SP-79 Table 2
1-1/4 42.16 42.16 12.7 per SP-79 Table 2
1-1/2 48.26 48.26 12.7 per SP-79 Table 2
2 60.33 60.33 15.9 per SP-79 Table 2
2-1/2 73.03 73.03 15.9 per SP-79 Table 2
3 88.90 88.90 15.9 per SP-79 Table 2
4 114.30 114.30 19.1 per SP-79 Table 2

Reference values per MSS SP-79-2024. Socket bore dimensions match ASME B16.11 Table 1 for the corresponding pressure class. Overall length from Table 2/2M per SP-79. Actual values shall be taken from the published standard. Metric values (Table 2M) are provided in millimeters.

5. Material Specifications

Material ASTM Spec Grade Min Yield (MPa) Min Tensile (MPa)
Carbon Steel (Forging) A105 250 485
Carbon Steel (Bars/Pipe) A181 Cl.I / Cl.II 250–295 470–590
Alloy Steel (Forging) A182 F1, F5, F9, F11, F22, F91 205–440 415–620

Stainless steel and nickel alloy reducer inserts are available from manufacturers — source from ASTM A182 or B366 grades compatible with the piping system. Always match reducer insert material to pipe material.

6. Tolerances, Finish, Marking and Testing

Requirement Specification
Dimensional Tolerances Per MSS SP-79-2024 Table 2 (US) and Table 2M (metric); socket bore tolerances ±0.5 mm; overall length tolerances ±1.5 mm
Surface Finish Free of fins, tears, laps, and surface defects; socket bore free of obstructions; male plain end free of excessive burrs
Hydrostatic Test Each fitting hydrostatically tested at 1.5× the pressure computed from the B16.5 Class rating at 38°C; no visible leakage permitted
Marking Per MSS SP-25: manufacturer name/trademark, material, pressure class, size (large × small), standard designation (SP-79), heat number. Eccentric fittings marked "ERE"; concentric marked "CRE".
