STANDARDS

MSS SP-83Download

1. Scope

This standard covers Class 3000 and 6000 steel pipe unions in three connection types — socket-welding (SW), threaded (THD), and buttwelding (BW) — in sizes NPS 1/8 through NPS 2. A pipe union is a disconnectible fitting with a bolted nut joint that allows the pipe run to be broken and reassembled without cutting. MSS SP-83 defines envelope and essential dimensions, tolerances, finish, testing, marking, material, and minimum performance requirements. The pressure-temperature ratings are based on ASME B16.5 Class 3000 and Class 6000 tables.

Edition: MSS SP-83-2025 (revised March 2025 — supersedes SP-83-2019) | Size Range: NPS 1/8–2 | Connection Types: Socket-Weld (SW), Threaded (NPT), Buttweld (BW) | Pressure Classes: CL3000 and CL6000 | Materials: Carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, nickel alloys | Note: Class 2000 not covered

2. Union Types and Construction

Union Type End Connection Pressure Class Typical Application Disassembly
Socket-Weld Union (SW) Socket bore both ends CL3000 / CL6000 High-pressure process, power, oil & gas Via union nut — after fillet weld
Threaded Union (THD) NPT both ends CL3000 / CL6000 Instrument air, utility, low-pressure process Via union nut — thread sealant required
Buttweld Union (BW) Beveled plain end both ends CL3000 / CL6000 High-pressure steam, gas, oil pipelines Via union nut — full butt-weld joint strength

3. Material Specifications

Material Category ASTM Spec Grade Min Yield (MPa) Min Tensile (MPa)
Carbon Steel (Forging) A105 250 485
Alloy Steel (Forging) A182 F1, F5, F9, F11, F22, F91 205–440 415–620
Stainless Steel A182 F304, F304L, F316, F316L 170–205 485–560
Duplex Stainless A182 F51 (2205), F53 (2507) 450–530 620–800
Nickel Alloy B366 Inconel 625, C-276, Monel 400, Incoloy 825 195–275 480–690

4. Union Nut and Seal Configuration

A pipe union consists of three main components: (1) Male adapter (with pipe end connection — SW/THD/BW), (2) Female adapter (with pipe end connection), and (3) Union nut (bolted ring that joins the two adapters). A flat-face or male-female seat/seal is located between the two adapters to provide a pressure-tight seal when the nut is tightened.

Component Material Standard Notes
Male & Female Adapters Same as pipe system material MSS SP-83, ASME B16.11 SW socket/THD thread/BW bevel per SP-83 dimensions
Union Nut Forged carbon/alloy steel Per SP-83 Bolted ring; tightened to specified torque
Seat / Seal Ring Metal-to-metal (steel/SS) or PTFE/RTFE gasket Per SP-83 Metal seat unions: reusable; gasket unions: replace gasket on disassembly

5. Tolerances, Testing, Finish and Marking

Requirement Specification
Dimensional Tolerances Per MSS SP-83-2025 — socket bore, thread gauge, bevel angle, nut dimensions within specified tolerances
Hydrostatic Test Each union tested at 1.5× the B16.5 Class rating pressure at 38°C; no visible leakage. For SW unions, test after welding if specified.
Surface Finish Free from fins, laps, seams, tears; socket/thread/bore free from obstructions; weld bevels clean and properly angled
Marking Per MSS SP-25: manufacturer/trademark, material, pressure class, size (NPS), connection type (SW/THD/BW), standard (SP-83), heat/trace number. Union nut marked with same information where practical.

7. How to Order (Per MSS SP-83)

Parameter Example Notes
Standard MSS SP-83 Always specify the standard designation
Connection Type Socket-Weld (SW) SW / THD / BW — must match pipe connection type
Pressure Class Class 3000 CL3000 or CL6000 — not Class 2000
Size (NPS) NPS 1 NPS 1/8 to NPS 2 only
Material / Grade ASTM A105 Must match piping system material spec
Seat Type Metal-to-Metal (MTM) or Gasket Specify if required; gasket seat uses replaceable gasket
Testing / Certification Hydrostatic Test Certificate, PMI, MTR Specify if required by project QA plan
